Crafting A New Vision: ‘Transformational Six’
The Transformational Six represents a framework for creating a culture of learning that empowers both students and teachers.  We will spend time applying the Transformational Six to design assignments that motivate students to think more deeply about their work and to take more responsibility for their learning.  We will also look at opportunities for students to contribute to the learning of their classmates.

  • Did the assignment build capacity for critical thinking on the web?
  • Did the assignment develop new lines of inquiry?
  • Are there opportunities for students to make their thinking visible?
  • Are there opportunities to broaden the perspective of the conversation with authentic audiences from around the world?
  • Is there an opportunity for students to create a contribution (purposeful work)?
  • Do students own their learning?

Green Screen Appventures!
Green screens are an exciting way to make learning visible!  Using Green Screen technology in your classroom supports the 4Cs of 21st Century skills: Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication. Using Green Screen is easy, economical and appropriate for all grade levels and subject areas!  Green-screen film projects can enhance learning and be more fun, interesting, and effective. Here are a few examples:
  • Flipped classroom - Are you filming a flipped classroom instructional video about math? Chemistry? Literature? Film in front of a green screen, then turn your background into your PowerPoint slides, lab demonstrations, or example problems.
  • Reviews - Have students virtually jump into book pages, movie scenes, or works of art as they share their insights and opinions.
  • Globalize your classroom - Report or teach while virtually in front of historical events, next to important people, or visiting far away places.
  • Media - Professionals have used green screens to create commercials, public service announcements, newscasts, and weather reports for decades. Give your students the real-world experience of creating their own green screen media productions.
The possibilities are endless!

Meaningful Global Interactions: From Tourist to Citizen
The great potential of a digitally connected world needs to be unleashed in our schools and classrooms. No longer can connecting and interacting with the global community be a 'nice to do.' Our role as educators and facilitators of learning requires that we help students develop as a part of our expanding society. So often, the difficulty of connecting and the disconnect from traditional curriculum topics has meant that we seldom connect to others in our community, much less the world. This session will look at the design of a continuum of interactions that fit different learning purposes. Using his own experiences in and with a wide variety of countries including Kenya, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, France and Singapore, Jeremiah will share success (and failures) with multiple projects and longer-term interactions he has used to move students and school communities from virtual tourists to true global citizens.

When Hawthorne Met Siri: How technology is changing our reading brains
Have you found yourself wondering...

  • Why is it so hard for my students to make inferences?
  • Are attention spans getting shorter?
  • Are we reading more or less than we used to?
  • Does anyone read the emails you send them?

We'll answer these questions and more, as we delve into the ways technology is changing not only what we read, but how we read.

We’ll explore the different deep reading skills required when reading digitally versus traditionally. We’ll look at the latest fMRI research on attention, working memory, and comprehension to see how our students’ (and our own) reading brains are evolving.

Finally, we’ll examine two tools (Seesaw Custom Activities and the Chrome extension Read & Write) that combine traditional deep reading skills with the benefits of technology.

Creating an Active Learning Classroom
One of the keys to academic achievement is active learning. According to research - personalized, collaborative, and connected learning experiences enhance student engagement, which in turn drives student success. By integrating blended and digital learning into the classroom, educators can take learning experiences to the next level and improve student performance.

In its basic and simplest definition, blended learning is an instructional methodology. It is a teaching and learning approach that combines face-to-face classroom methods with digital created activities to deliver instruction. A classroom that nurtures creativity often results in students taking different approaches to interacting with the same curriculum. Computers don’t teach, Apps don’t teach, TEACHERS teach. Technology does not replace educators. Digital learning is an instructional strategy that enhancing and engages learners. It’s important to know what tools we have and what they’re capable of providing to enhance student learning. This session will focus on some blended learning tools that can increase engagement that educators can use for instruction.

Core to the changes that blended and personalized learning enable is a redesign of the learning space itself. The redesign is more than merely splitting typical practices across online and physical spaces. Truly personalized learning requires a change in the practices themselves which then drives a purpose-driven redesign of the way we use our spaces, both physical and virtual. This session will use examples and mini-activities to discuss how to approach spatial and resource design that supports blended and personalized learning. Examples from various learning spaces including museums, public libraries, college campuses, and school classrooms will be highlighted.
